Hilliard Davidson High School wins Division I state football championship, 2009
Gutsy, a gambler, crazy -- even boring.
All these are adjectives have been used to describe Hilliard Davidson football coach Brian White in recent years.
While all, some, or none may be true, with a thrilling 16-15 victory over Cleveland Glenville in the Division I state championship game Saturday, Dec. 5, at Canton's Fawcett Stadium, two-time state champion would be the most accurate.
White rolled the dice with the game on the line and cashed in big-time as his underestimated Wildcats (13-1) scored the upset of upsets in winning 16-15, giving the school its second state crown in just four seasons.
Davidson senior running back Spencer Delande scored on a 2-yard touchdown run with 1:04 left in regulation to make it 15-14, Tarblooders. But instead of going for the tying point-after, Davidson opted for a two-point conversion run.
Starting quarterback Jake Trubiano, who carried his team on his shoulder all night, was in at running back for the conversion. He took a pitch running left and bowled his way into the end zone for what turned out to be the winning score.
"We had this play in since the start of the playoffs," Trubiano said. "Coach told us if we ever used it, it would never fail."
The coach had made a similar decision in a similar situation during the second overtime of the 2006 state championship game. Again, instead of playing for overtime this time around, he put faith in his system, his players and their execution.
"If you make it," White said, "it's a good call. We tell our kids if we get in these situations we're going to play to win. You have to be smart about it. I felt at that point in the game, with the offense that they have, I just thought it was the smart and right thing to do at that time."
The winning score was set up by a 73-yard run by Trubiano with 3:11 to play, which went from the Davidson 24 to the Glenville 3-yard line.
It seemed as if the Tarblooders, who were making their first-ever state championship appearance, were on their way to victory. But Glenville wide receivers dropped sure-fire touchdown passes on back-to-back plays deep in Wildcats' territory in the closing minutes, with their team nursing a 7-point lead.
First, Nicholas Davis let a Cardale Jones pass slip through his fingers in the end zone with 3:18 remaining, then All-Ohio selection Christian Bryant flat-out dropped a pass at the 5 with 3:11 left, turning it over to Davidson and setting Trubiano up to be the star.
"We were down by a touchdown but we knew we could come back," Trubiano said. "We all had faith in the system and we just pulled through. We played our hearts out; everyone left everything out on the field."
Despite the fact his Davidson team was playing such an imposing physical force in Glenville, White just hoped his squad would be around late in the game.
"We felt like if we could stick with it for four quarters, we'd have a chance at the end," White said. "When you look across the field and see the monsters that they are, I wasn't sure we could stay with them for four quarters.
"Glenville (13-2) proved to us on film that they don't always play four quarters, but when they do, they're unbelievable."
Glenville coach Ted Ginn Sr. said his team didn't see anything different from what they saw from Davidson on tape. They just weren't able to consistently stop what was coming at them.
"We saw what we saw on film," Ginn said. "They run the ball. They stuck to what they believe in -- assignment football. We didn't face too many teams like that this year. We're a reaction football team, you have to stay discipline against a team like this and at times we didn't."
Trubiano led the way with 196 rushing yards on just 18 carries. He attempted two passes, but failed to complete either.
Knocking off a team that probably has more Division I college prospects than Davidson has had in the last 10 years says something about the type of kids White has in his program.
"I think it's a testament to our kids and the belief they have in our system, our style of play," he said. "The belief and faith our kids have in each other, the faith we have in them and their mental and physical toughness. Throughout the course of the season these guys worked so hard and it paid off.
"I couldn't be more proud than I am about this group of guys."
Davidson's first points came on a 24-yard TD run by Rico Butler followed by a trick conversion run by Keith Heitzman. But Glenville answered back quickly. The Tarblooders scored two touchdowns in a minute to take a 15-8 advantage.
